Teaching with a Purpose, A New Approach to Teaching Shoshone is a 36 minute video on DVD that guides Shoshone language learners through a series of videos from basic counting to subtitled Shoshone legends.
Sections include “Counting 1-10,” “Clothing,” “Greetings and Responses,” “Visiting Family,” “Frequently Asked Questions and Answers,” “Eagle Visits the Animals, A Short Story,” “A Zo’abich Story,” “Squirrels as Traditional Food,” and “Making Indian Bread.”
The Shoshone language in this video was translated by Shoshone speakers/elders Alfred Jackson, Ilaine Tybo Premo and Brenda Jackson. The “new approach” was developed using the “old” method of verbally sharing the language.
“Teaching with a Purpose” is written, directed and produced by Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone tribal member Victoria Jackson.
